‘Tis the Season to Share Your Story
Becoming Minimalist unites people around a common, life-giving pursuit. We have discovered there is more to be found in owning less than we can ever discover pursuing more.
Regardless of where we find ourselves on this journey, we are resolved to live by these ideals and make it true in our lives.
This is an important worldview because it provides potential and opportunity to all who embrace it. And it offers joy. And joy is best experienced when it is shared.
All around the world, family and friends will gather together to celebrate various holidays. We will take time to catch up with loved ones. And for those whose lives have been changed by the adoption of minimalist ideas, the season represents a golden opportunity to share your story and newfound approach to life with those you love the most.
If you are actively pursuing simplicity, you are living a counter-cultural lifestyle. You have a personal story of discovering simplicity in a world that champions consumerism. Almost by default, your story is unique, interesting, and compelling. People will be interested to hear it.
Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories of people discovering minimalism. Some found it through their upbringing. Some were introduced through disaster (fire, burglary, downsizing). Some were introduced by a friend. While others picked up just the right book or stumbled onto the right website at the right moment .
Regardless of how you personally discovered it, your story has the power to inspire others and further the message of finding more life by owning fewer possessions.
So share your story with friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors this holiday season. Look for opportunities to retell it over coffee, around the dinner table, or during a family tradition. Be bold with the truth of simplicity and owning less.
Of course, when you do, tell your story in humility, motivated by love, without confrontation. Be patient with your family (especially if some of their traditions run contrary to your pursuit of minimalism). Refrain from attitudes and words that communicate any hint of superiority.
Our message may not be fully embraced by those who hear it the first time. But that’s okay. Our job is not to change someone’s life for them.
Our role is to simply offer the invitation.

All the Things You Don’t Need for a Perfect Holiday
’Tis the season for unreasonable expectations.
Over the next several weeks, televisions, magazines, and websites will offer us countless images of the “perfect” holiday season.
Beaming faces, sparkling eyes, glistening gifts, and bountiful tables of food will be shown on media platforms of every sort. Many of these images will stand side-by-side with corporate logos and retail stores.
The turkey is from Butterball. The necklace from Kay’s. The soda is Coca-Cola. The toys were purchased at Walmart. The coffee is Folger’s. The slippers are from Kohl’s. And the new vehicle with the red bow in the driveway is a Lexus.
It would seem, from the image on the screen, these items are essential for a perfect holiday. Because obviously, the smiles are bigger, the family is happier, and the lights shine brighter—if, and only if, we buy the consumer product to make it so.
This is not a new strategy from marketers. All year long they communicate the subtle (and not-so-subtle) message that our lives will be better, happier, and more fulfilled if we buy whatever they’re selling.
But their message reaches a fever-pitch during the Holiday Season and nobody is immune to their meticulously crafted persuasion.
I assume one reason for the effectiveness of these ad campaigns is because we all desire a joyful and merry holiday season. We cherish our time with family and want it to be picture perfect. We love our kids and want them to be happy. And we all enjoy times of celebration and desire them to be memorable.
But let’s remember one important truth today: You don’t need any of those things for a perfect holiday season.
You don’t need a new car in the driveway for a perfect holiday season. You don’t need new jewelry for a perfect holiday season. You don’t need slippers. You don’t need a perfectly-decorated 10-foot tree. And you certainly don’t need a large pile of glistening presents underneath it.
You don’t need any of those things for a perfect holiday season.
The holiday season is about family, and thankfulness, and faith and love and peace. It’s about reflecting on the year that was, and looking forward to the year that can be. It’s about counting blessings. It’s about slowing down long enough to appreciate the things in life that matter most.
And too often, the consumeristic promises and fake-photos keep us from enjoying the season. Instead of slowing down, we speed up. We rush from store-to-store (or website-to-website) filling our shopping carts with all the things we think we need. We fill our schedules with increased commitments and responsibilities. We max out our credit cards.
We get so frustrated and weary chasing the perfect holiday season that we never take time to enjoy the one right in front of us.
But Melody Beattie once said, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”
Once we slow down enough to notice our blessings, we begin to see that we already have everything we need for a perfect holiday season.
And maybe that is what worries marketers the most… that we would begin to recognize all the things we don’t need for a perfect holiday season.

☑ This Checklist is Key to Leaving Any Company Successfully
The 25-point layoff success checklist that tells you what to do when you’re laid off.
Some companies are ruthless with layoffs, locking you out from their computer network and walking you to the door as soon as notification has been given.
Don’t wait until you’re saying “I’ve been laid off, now what?”
Even if your ex-employer-to-be isn’t that harsh, prepare yourself in advance once you feel a layoff might be coming your way.
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.Free bonus: Download a PDF version of this article to use as a handy reference.
25 actions to achieve layoff success
- Ask for recommendation or reference letters from ‘higher-ups’ – or even LinkedIn Recommendations – and agree how to collect them.
- Update your resume or CV.
- Research your employee termination rights and what to do if they’re not respected.
- Calculate how much money the company owes you in unpaid salary, vacation time, bonuses, etc.
- Learn about severance pay: how much to expect, the company’s deadline for paying by law (e.g. in Israel, within 30 days of dismissal) and what you need to do to collect it.
- List the documentation that the company is required to give for e.g. unemployment benefits, income tax, joining another employer, etc., such as a pink slip or other end-of-work certificate.
- Find out which documentation the company will expect you to sign before leaving.
- Chat with an HR representative about getting your rights.
- Ask about access to outplacement services or a parent or sister company that can take you in.
- Get your personnel folder.
- Have a last chat with your boss. Where relevant, discuss the possibility of returning as a freelance consultant.
- Find out which remaining work tasks you need to accomplish before you leave.
- Know to whom you need to transfer your responsibilities and start doing so.
- Contact business partners & clients about the change in contact person on your now ex-projects. Start with the contacts you know are hiring. Ask for job referrals at the same time and attach your newly-updated resume. A nice touch is to remind them of some success you had with them or for them, and then thank them for their business during your time at the company.
- Say goodbye to colleagues. If possible, take time to walk around the office on your last day and say goodbye personally. Then send a goodbye email to people out of the office or at another location. Ask for referrals and attach your updated resume. You never know where a job lead can come from.
- Get all your colleagues’ and business partners’ contact information and connect with them on social media so that you can network with them later during your job search.
- Collect recommendation or reference letters.
- Complete remaining work tasks and the hand-off of responsibilities.
- Make copies of your work to add to your work portfolio (where relevant).
- Backup information related to your work achievements such as statistics, emailed compliments and thank yous.
- Remove all personal files from your work computer.
- Give back equipment such as your company car, cell phone, laptop, uniform, security badge, etc.
- Confirm that the company has respected your rights and given you all money and documentation owed.
- Sign company documentation as requested but only if you’ve received all your entitled rights.
- Pack up all your personal belongings to take home.
Bonus #26: Leave a good impression
Layoffs are never easy for everyone involved. Deal with them like a professional and the good impressions you leave will only help you in finding your next job. If the company’s situation improves, they might want you back or if you get laid off from another job, you may want to come back later.
Here’s an inspiring story of why you should never burn your bridges:
“Fairly early in my career, I had to implement a RIF (Reduction In Force = layoff) for 1/3 of my department about 15 people in the terrible economy of late 2001. This was purely a monetary issue for the company all these folks were decent performers, however, they were chosen because they were in the bottom 1/3 in terms of performance.
The one thing I learned, is that you get to see a side of a person that you would never see outside a termination : how they react to the worst work news they could possibly get. Out of the 15 people some people were angry at the company and really angry at me, some people cried, and some people handled it amazingly well – so well that in 2 or 3 cases I decided that this person was so reasonable and so mature that I would have been better off firing someone else. In fact, one person said to me, “I’m really bummed out because I love working here, but I understand. Wow, this must be incredibly hard to fire all these people, how are you holding up?”.
While I could not reverse the fact that these people were being RIF’d and I had tried to help all 15 people with new jobs and references, it was hard not to work extra hard for the people who I thought handled it well.
To this day I have a great “last impression” of them. It made me feel better about recommending them for a new job, and in one case I was actually able to hire one person back 6 months later when I got additional head count.”
Share this checklist with anyone you know who just got laid off or is worried about it. Best used when printed out.

Avoid Holiday Clutter. Build Homes for Orphans.
One year ago, we founded and launched a nonprofit organization called The Hope Effect. Our dream is to change orphan care around the world by focusing on new solutions that mimic the family unit.
Rather then constructing orphanages as most people imagine them to be (with high child to adult ratios), we are building smaller homes. Each house will become a home for 6-8 children and 2 parents—in this way, we are able to better reproduce the family unit so children receive all the love and attention and affection they would in a family.
To date, The Hope Effect has raised over $250,000 for orphan care. And $160k of that money has come from the Becoming Minimalist community! I couldn’t be more proud of all the work we’ve been able to accomplish.
Siguatepeque, Honduras.
Our first project began earlier this year in Siguatepeque, Honduras on the campus of La Providencia Orphan Care Community. Ground was broken in January. Currently, Honduran construction crews are working to complete the interior of the home. We expect the house to be completed soon and parents to be placed in the home with children early next year.
San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico.
Our next home will be built in San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico. San Luis Río Colorado is a city of 250,000 people located on the US-Mexico border. In case you haven’t been watching, the border between US and Mexico has been receiving lots of attention recently—we want to be proactive in helping where we can.
Our desired work has been well-received in the city among government officials and community leaders. In fact, we have been offered a piece of land to construct 3-4 homes just blocks away from the city’s department of child protection services (DIF), which would be an amazing location for us! If funding continues to accumulate, we will be able to begin building these homes in 2017.
To get an idea of the city, here are some sites from my most recent trip:
Currently we have raised over $50,000 for this project in Mexico. And I’d love for you to help us raise the rest—and solve some of your holiday clutter dilemmas while you do.
Homes For the Holidays
Last year, we launched our first Homes for the Holidays campaign. People all over the world used the opportunity to ask for donations to a nonprofit organization in lieu of holiday clutter under the tree.
The campaign was quite successful. In fact, during the final two months of 2015, we raised over $100,000.
Today, we are launching the campaign again. If you’ve got enough stuff already and are looking for an opportunity to keep your holiday clutter down to a minimum, partner with The Hope Effect by joining our Homes for the Holidays campaign.
Rather than compiling a long gift list this holiday season, ask your friends and family to help you provide homes for orphans by making a donation rather than purchasing another present.
It’s easy to do: 1) Create your very own personalized fundraising page. Then, 2) Share it with your friends and family. It takes less than 5 minutes to sign-up.
Our goal is to have 1,000 people raise $100 each =$100,000 to build homes in San Luis Río Colorado.
Our commitment to you is that 100% of your donation will be used directly for orphan care (construction of homes and operation of orphan care communities). My investment into The Hope Effect has provided the administrative funding so all public donations can be used for the reason they was intended. You can read more here. And because we are a registered 501(c)(3) organization, your loved-one’s donation is tax-deductible.
Or, Join our $10 Team
If you prefer to donate directly, consider joining our $10 Team by committing to donate at least $10/month. For the price of a Netflix subscription, you can provide loving homes and families for orphans around the world. It’s simple and safe to sign-up. The commitment is small, but the combined impact is significant.
This holiday season, let’s be known for the problems we solve.

🎁 Why Holiday Job Searches Lead To The Best Presents
Here are 7 reasons to job search during the holiday season.
This is a guest post by Dave Thomas.
Could finding a job actually be easier during the holiday season?
While the holidays are a very busy time of year for most people, the time period can also be great for landing a job.
Unfortunately, many individuals in need of work figure that now is the time to take a break, no one is hiring with all the rush of the holiday season, and the only jobs that may be available are entry-level jobs such as low-paying retail gigs.
Think again.
As it turns out, many employers do take on new employees over the holiday season such as in Western countries, where many companies not in the retail business are winding down their end-of-year operations, giving them more time to focus on what they need from a manpower standpoint heading into the New Year.

In the event you’ve been toying with taking a break over the holidays from the job hunt, keep some of these factors in mind:
1) Staying motivated
All of us at one time or another has found ourselves on the job prowl. Looking for a job is often a full-time job, meaning it is not uncommon to want to take a break. The problem with taking what is sometimes a prolonged break (a few weeks or months) is that we have trouble becoming motivated once again.
Don’t find yourself in a rut that might become too hard to get out of after the holidays are done.
2) The number of job hunters is likely to dwindle
While you may think there will be countless people searching for work during the holidays, keep in mind that many of them may be thinking like you too, that it’s time to take a break.
If that’s the case, you’ll have more access to employers as the number of resumes they’re likely to receive will decrease.
3) Network, network, network
If you’re invited to holiday parties, what better time to network?
You may be a little hesitant to attend holiday events given you’re out of work, but that is exactly the time to get with other professionals who escaped the layoff bug and network. Ask them to give you some leads they may have on job openings, who exactly to contact.
Heck, they may even put in a good word for you.
4) Work desire can be rewarded
Granted, probably the last thing you want to be doing before and during the holidays is job hunting, but it could work to your benefit: some employers will view this as motivational, along with being an eagerness on your part to find work while others are looking to take off time from work over the holidays.
Showing a potential employer that you’re hungry for work is half the battle.
5) Get your foot in the door before the New Year turnover
In some cases, companies will be dealing with turnover in the New Year. You can use this time of year to interview, and if all goes well, replace those who are on their way out.
6) Go with the holiday flow
Many bosses will be in a more relaxed mood with the holidays coming, so take advantage of it. The majority of employers (unless they’re retail managers) are winding down their year, and if it was a good one, could prove more receptive to the job you are seeking.
7) Give yourself a present
Lastly, what better holiday gift could you give yourself than a new job?
Many people are out there looking for work. Take the initiative to find yourself a job during your holiday season so that you have something positive to kick-off your New Year.
While there are no guarantees that you will actually find a new job, the holidays really are a good time of the year to roll up your sleeves and go for it.
Better yet, you may get your foot in the door somewhere while your competition is stuck in the mall parking lot looking for a spot.

Maybe Success Just Feels Like This
“Be happy with who you are and what you do, and you can do anything you want.” —Steve Maraboli
Looking back over the past few years, my life has been a crazy ride and something I never imagined. I started this website as a simple online journal, but today:
—Becoming Minimalist welcomes almost 1,000,000 visitors each month totaling 2,000,000 page views.
—Our Facebook page recently exceeded 500,000 followers.
—I’ve written three bestselling books (Simplify, Clutterfree with Kids, and The More of Less)—ranking as high as the #1 Self-Help book on Amazon and appearing on every major best-sellers list in the country except for the NYT.
—My wife and I started a nonprofit organization to change orphan care around the world. To date, The Hope Effect has raised over $250,000 for orphan care projects.
—And I’ve been privileged to speak internationally at various venues inviting others to find more life by owning less.
I include that list above for one reason: by almost every available measure, you could say it’s been a pretty successful past few years.
But here’s what’s weird. I don’t actually feel all that successful.
In fact, some days, I feel like I don’t even know what I’m doing. Other days, I’m evaluating my life wondering what I’m doing wrong, why things aren’t going even better, and wishing I was better at any number of different skills.
I look at other people and wonder why my growth hasn’t equaled theirs. I look at the long list of things I wish I could accomplish and wonder why I haven’t. Some days feel productive… but other days, I wonder if I’m too undisciplined or too undeveloped in the skills I need to move forward.
While things appear to be successful from the outside, I am often filled with doubt that they actually are.
But I’m starting to wonder, if maybe, this is just what success feels like.
I was texting with a friend one time—someone who probably looks up to me in both age and career. He kindly asked how things were going. My response went something like this, “Some days I feel productive. Other days, I feel distracted and undisciplined. As a result, I can never quite tell if I’m moving forward effectively or too inefficient to do so.”
And I’m starting to wonder, if maybe, I’m not alone. If so, maybe this is just what success feels like.
Maybe success feels more like challenge, than accomplishment. I look at people who make success look effortless. And to be honest, there are times when my work seems to flow naturally—entirely unforced. But most of the time, it doesn’t. Most of the time it is hard and calls me to question my skills and talents—always wishing I had more or different.
Maybe success feels more like discontent, than completion. Maybe success never feels like a finish line, or a goal that is ultimately crossed off a list. Maybe success, regardless of past accomplishments, always looks like it is off in the horizon on the other side of the next hill.
Maybe success feels more like giving thanks, than being thanked. I get emails of appreciation every day from readers. They are lovely and I find great encouragement in them. But I often feel their gratitude is misplaced as I consider all the men and women who built into my life to make all of this possible: parents, friends, my family, and fellow bloggers. They are the successful ones worthy of my gratitude.
Maybe success doesn’t always feel like it looks from the outside. (tweet that)
Take heart in this truth, regardless of your pursuit in life. Whether you are trying to be a successful writer, a successful farmer, a successful school teacher, or a successful mom, maybe success doesn’t always feel like success.
Maybe success just feels like this. And if so, maybe you are far more effective in your role than you ever imagined.

💗 15 Surprisingly Simple Ways To Find A Dream Job
Most people work because they have to. What if you could work because you loved to?
Learn how to find a job you love.
Dream jobs are not what you think
You probably have an ideal job you’ve fantasized about: movie star, professional athlete or something else rich and famous, right?
Many people do get to do those things, and they don’t always love it. Far from it: it’s hard to be in the public eye, stressful when people only appreciate you for fame or money, and just tough to make friends who understand your problems.
On top of that, many people’s perceived dream jobs are just unrealistic: the jobs might require a lot of natural talent, expensive training, maybe even friends in high places.
In this clip, everyone has a dream job but almost no one is working it:
(Clip taken from 50 Uber Popular Job Search Videos You Need To See)
On the other hand, many more people have jobs they absolutely love, jobs they absolutely did NOT dream about.
I’ve been there too.
From 2000-2001, I worked as a web developer at Amazon.com in Seattle and then Paris, France. I had never dreamed of being a web developer, my dream was to be a professional ball player. But I loved that job. It was so much fun, I didn’t want to leave in the evening and couldn’t wait to get to the office in the morning.
While I was there, that was my dream job.

Then what makes a dream job?
Your dream job depends on a number of things, and it changes as your priorities change.
UK charity The Centre for Effective Altruism went through over 60 studies about what makes a dream job and these are the six key ingredients they found:
- Work you’re good at
- Work that helps others
- Engaging work that lets you enter a state of flow (freedom, variety, clear tasks, feedback)
- Supportive colleagues
- A job that meets your basic needs, like fair pay, a short commute and reasonable hours
- A job that fits your personal life
Most importantly, focus on getting good at something that helps others.
When I look back, my job at Amazon definitely met all those conditions.
If I had to choose a definition: a dream job is a job you love.
A dream job is a job you love ♥Click To TweetHow do you find your next dream job?
Get Rich Slowly is a terrific blog that focuses on helping people make and save money. They asked their readers what they did to find jobs they love. Here are the best answers in the long list:
1) Create a fertile environment for “accidental discovery”
If you’re still in school, increase your chance of lucking out in finding a perfect job by studying broad topics like business or art.
Why this works: by definition, specialty topics will limit your focus. Going in the opposite direction will give you more exposure to new ideas and concepts that could in turn lead to a new dream job.
2) Follow your dreams
If it’s still possible, try for that job you fantasized about in the past.
Why this works: you’re more likely to achieve your objective if you have a clear vision of what it is.
3) Look into your past for your future
List your happiest childhood memories or past successes – school or work – and try to understand what made them so.
Why this works: it’s often easier to duplicate success than create it the first time.
4) Know your strengths and choose a job that leverages them
Why this works: people tend to like the things they’re good at.
5) Test yourself
Take aptitude tests like the Myers-Briggs and Strong Interest Inventory tests to determine which directions you should investigate first.
Why this works: although the tests usually require a fee, they’re short and give you almost immediate results.
6) Be open to friends’ positive suggestions…
“A friend jokingly suggested it to me… it was something I never saw myself in, but it fits.”
Why this works: a quote- “most people aren’t capable of being honest with themselves about what it is that they truly love. Too many outside pressures — family expectations, peer groups, societal issues, and plain old “noise” — compromise our ability to really be clear on what we enjoy.”
7) …while ignoring negative opinions while pushing forward
Professor Deepak Malhotra of the Harvard Business School gave a fantastic speech to graduating MBA students where he mentioned how the only reason he found his dream job was because he was “a good quitter… who quit often, and quit early.”
He changed college majors 5 times, including changing schools in the middle, and changed jobs many times before settling on his dream job, which was something he didn’t even know existed back in college, and would never had know about if he hadn’t kept quitting and pushing forward.
(The entire speech is worth watching below, but he gets into it around the 10:45 mark)
Why this works: people learn more by doing than regretting.
8) Experiment with different possible career choices
Try out various jobs on a part-time or volunteer basis, perhaps while still holding a full-time job. Sean Aiken tried to do 52 jobs in 52 weeks.
Why this works: there are many jobs that people simply don’t know exist. Also, some people stop enjoying a passion when money, deadlines and client expectations enter the picture.
9) Pay the bills first
Focus first on finding a job you like that can also provide the resources to do the things you love.
Why this works: not every passion translates well into a job and a standard of living you’re comfortable with.
10) Consider lowering your salary expectations
Also known as the “I’d pay to play” effect.
Why this works: by lowering your price, you open the door to more employers that can afford your services.
11) Appreciate good people
One of the reasons I loved my job at Amazon was the fun I had with my colleagues on a daily basis, but also the things I learned from them.
Why this works: whether a loner or a social animal, you will get comfortable in a role quicker with great co-workers that understand you. However, people come and go so you should rarely base any decisions just on this one point.
12) Try a different job in your current industry
“A friend of mine switched…both jobs use essentially the same skills for different results, but the second job is a much better fit than the first.”
Why this works: you already have the necessary skills and are familiar with the industry, so the benefits happen quicker.
13) Research the profession that interests you
Use informational interviews, forum and blog questions, trade show visits, radio call-ins, whatever it takes for you to get a better picture of life in your target job. Quote: “you have to know if you’re passionate about the job *or* the subject.”
Why this works: the reality of a job may be different that the one you dreamed about. Another good point is that your passion may change after doing it 40 hours a week.
14) Change your current job into one you love
Probably one of the last things people think about when it comes to dream jobs: what could you change in your current job to make it a dream job?
Why this works: saves you a job search and might be quick to implement.
15) Talk to a career coach
Career coaches and counselors specialize in helping people choose a direction or career path.
Why this works: coaches can draw on their experience and expertise to give you personalized advice that’s more effective than test results.
