Get Uncluttered This Fall

uncluttered-image

I have significantly less stress in my life and more self-control. Most importantly, I’m becoming more like the mom and wife I want to be. — Caryn Seney

Uncluttered

Uncluttered is a 12-week online course designed intentionally to help you own less, live more, and discover the life you’ve always wanted.

We offer the course only three times each year. We are launching the Fall Edition today. But registration ends on Sunday, September 02 at 11:59pm.

If you want this to be the season you declutter your home, own less, and get ahead financially, this is the right program for you.

The course includes…

  • Videos with step-by-step instructions
  • Interviews with thought leaders in productivity and minimalism
  • Live webinars tackling specific tough-clutter topics
  • Live Q&As for members to ask questions
  • Weekly challenges
  • And perhaps best of all: accountability and encouragement from a super-engaged community.

If you are drawn to the idea of owning less, but need some extra help getting there, this course is perfect for you. Uncluttered will provide just the motivation you need to declutter your home and start living a better life. By the end, you will have decluttered every major living area in your home and begun changing your spending habits.

Every Monday, you will receive a video from me, an exclusive interview with one of the brightest minds in the simplicity movement, and/or written content prepared exclusively for the course. You will receive a weekly challenge to complete. And opportunities to engage with the community in a private Facebook group and with me during live webinars and live question and answer opportunities.

The course offers everything a book or blog post cannot: community, accountability, and opportunity to ask questions.

The Uncluttered plan will help you celebrate your progress as it provides helpful answers on where to start and how to stay motivated.

To find more information about the content and the subjects covered, click here.

Extra Tools to Get Your Family On Board

We’ve created special material for those of you with families.

Because of the high number of people with families who register for the course, we have included a special family-specific section with tips and strategies for getting your family and kids onboard with the process. The new section includes a family-specific webinar to answer your questions, a free Children’s ebook to read with your kids, and a Couple’s Discussion Guide to spark conversation with your spouse or partner.

We want you to find the most success during the 12-week course and we are confident these resources will help you do that.

The Results

Over 20,000 people have gone through the course. Here are just a few of the responses:

The term life-changing gets thrown around a lot, but this course really is. I went into it with a lot of shame and anxiety. Joshua gently guided us in a way that made lasting change seem possible. My home is much improved, but my mindset is also clearer. —Kathryn Wagner, Los Angeles, CA

The power of this shared experience is hard to explain to people, it is so overwhelmingly positive. It not only provides the incentive to keep going, but reminds you there are good people out there. You find yourself rooting for complete strangers. Together, there is a momentum that drives you through the course. It was completely unexpected and so overwhelmingly helpful. —Tanya S, Webster, NY

I am a better mother, a better wife, a better housekeeper, a better budgeter, a better teacher, a better neighbor and a better friend. I’m still a work in progress, but it feels good to be where I am at. —Pam L.

My credit card statement came today. $1,000.00 under my typical monthly balance! Thank you Uncluttered community. I’ve been at this for years; however, it’s clear I truly needed this group to get to that next level. —Cheyanne Morris, St. Paul, MN

The Details

We offer the course three times each year.

The Fall Edition begins on Tuesday, September 04. Declutter your home before the holidays. Registration is open now, but only for the next 9 days — ending September 02.

The cost is $89. But you can find a 25% off discount code in the back of The More of Less: Finding the Life You Want Under Everything You Own. The book is not required—but the course is based on it. And it’s cheaper to buy the book and use the discount code than it is to pay full price—the option is yours.

I am personally involved in every aspect of the course. Helping people live more by owning less is what I am passionate about. I created the videos and the content. I host the webinars. I answer questions in the Facebook group. And I host live video chats over the course of the 12 weeks. My goal is to help and cheer you along. I have come to understand how essential community, accountability, and ongoing encouragement is for people. And I work hard to craft that culture for the Uncluttered Course.

When you join Uncluttered, you’ll receive lifetime access to the course. That means you can take it as many times as you want (or need). I know life can be busy, and the unexpected can happen at any time. But we’re here to help you succeed. And if you ever want to do the course again, or just enjoy a decluttering refresher, you’ll be welcomed back.

Uncluttered is a 12-week online program with videos, interviews, webinars, articles, weekly challenges, accountability, and community. It is strategically packaged for one purpose: To help you unclutter your home, own less stuff, and find space to live the life you want.

Visit My Becoming Minimalist to register.

Make this the season you discover the home and life you’ve always wanted.

The Life We Learned

My wife, Kim, and I will celebrate 20 years of marriage next summer. Our wedding ceremony in 1999 took place at a church in Omaha, NE. As part of the process, we attended premarital counseling. Our counselor’s insights and wisdom helped secure a solid foundation on which to build our marriage. I recommend it to everyone.

One of the key components of our counseling sessions was to better understand how each of us were raised differently, by different parents, in different parts of the country. It didn’t take long into our conversation to discover important factors in the way we were raised that led to differences of opinion on things—both big and little.

Take birthdays for example. Birthdays were never a big thing in my family. We celebrated them, of course, but usually when it was convenient—moving the celebration to a weekend was a common occurrence. (Perhaps the fact that my two siblings and I all have birthdays within three days of each other, in December, had something to do with it.)

For my wife, however, the actual birthdate is special. Her family always celebrated each person’s birthday with a large family dinner on the actual day. It included gifts and food and family—and everyone made a point to be there.

In this one example, my wife and I were raised with different experiences that ultimately influenced how we view birthdays. Even to this day, my wife experiences disappointment if I am not as attentive to her actual birthdate as she has come to expect.

Expectations based on our family of origin contribute significantly to the people we are today in countless (and often unforeseen) ways. The family dynamics we experienced and the economic conditions surrounding that phase of life are important for us to examine in order to gain perspective on our tendencies toward material possessions.

Some of our parents were collectors, savers, or even hoarders. These habits may be, in part, due to the generation they grew up in or their own family of origin story. For others, however, your parents threw everything away, or were neat freaks never allowing any sort of a mess in their home.

Both extremes can be influential on children. Sometimes we unintentionally follow in their footsteps, never challenging our assumptions, merely because our parents defined normal for us.

But other times, our family of origin experience may influence us to take the opposite path—especially if we felt it was unhealthy or we were mistreated. Or maybe your experience, like mine, was somewhere in the middle.

One question I often raise with audiences when I speak is to identify how your parents’ relationship with material possessions has influenced your own.

Socioeconomic status can also greatly influence who we become.

Growing up in wealth, or even middle class, greatly shapes our understanding of normal and often influences our baseline expectations for life.

When Kim and I bought our first house, it was exciting to own something we could make our own. However, disappointment soon set in as we moved our old things from our tiny apartment into the 3-bedroom home. It didn’t feel as beautiful as it did when we saw is as a model home. In fact, it felt kinda empty to us.

All of our rooms growing up were full of furnishings, even the closets were stuffed full. Without even questioning our assumptions, we began purchasing more and more things trying to fill the house as soon as possible—never stopping to consider how our parents worked for years to get to the place they were when we came along. We just wanted it all, even expected it, right away. This was our understanding of normal.

Of course, growing up in poverty can also greatly influence one’s relationship with physical possessions.

I have a friend. Let’s call her Hannah. Hannah grew up in poverty with eight siblings in a small home. They did not have many clothes or toys and often wondered where their next meal might come from.

This experience motivated Hannah to make something of herself in the business world. She studied hard, worked hard, and stretched herself whenever possible. Today, she is very successful. Somewhere along the way, she made a vow that she would give her children as good a life as she could possibly afford.

It is understandable how she got to this point and the pressure she puts on herself to provide for her family. But Hannah reached out to me recently because she is starting to think she has gone too far to the other extreme. She is beginning to see unexpected selfishness and entitlement grow in her children.

In order to combat this, Hannah’s family has started volunteering at homeless shelters and giving generously to organizations that help those in need. She wants her children to understand the reality of poverty—the life she knows so well—and help them see better the needs around them. She is beginning to recognize her response to poverty was excess—and that may not be the best answer for her family’s happiness after all.

Our heritage is deeply ingrained in each of us. It is influencing our view of the world and material possessions. But discovering how takes time and emotional energy. Of course, Kim and I can both attest it is worth the effort.

job search life hacks

General Job Search

1. Never ask someone how his or her job search is going. It's going terribly until they tell you they got a new job.

2. Want to find a good job after college? Make friends with as many people in your field that are on track to graduate one or two years ahead of you.

3. If you have to pay a company to work for them, it’s a scam. Period!

4. Never send your resume as a Word document (unless asked). Send it as a PDF file since it’s much cleaner and professional-looking.

5. If you want to know where you’ll be five years from now, look at who you’re hanging out with today.

6. Always be ten minutes early to everything. After a while, it will become a habit and you’ll never be late to anything again.

Proofreading

7. Trying to find an example of a word used in a sentence? Google the word and click “news”. You’ll get a bunch of headlines with that word in it.

8. Looking for something [such as typos]? Scan right to left with your eyes. You’ll pick up more since your brain isn’t used to reading that way.

9. [Use this for resumes & cover letters:] Writing an essay? Copy and paste it into Google Translate and have them read it out to you. It’ll be much easier to find errors this way.

10. When proofreading, read out loud to yourself. Your mouth will catch errors your mind might glance over. (Or you might end up leaving in funny resume mistakes)

Appearance

11. The first thing people notice about you, subconsciously, are your shoes. Dress to impress.

12. Two things to never be cheap on are a mattress and shoes. If you’re not in one, you’re in another.

13. Use a banana peel to shine your shoes. It’s natural, no chemicals and no risk of staining the carpet!

14. Organize your clothes based on what activity you’re doing, not by type of clothing. One drawer for casual wear, one drawer for workout clothes, one drawer or section of the closet for going out clothes, and one for work clothes.

15. Life Tip: If you didn’t see anyone important yesterday, you can wear the same clothes today.

16.

17. Get rid of little skin blemishes by putting a dab of honey over the area and covering it with a band-aid overnight. Honey kills bacteria, keeps skin sterile, and speeds up the healing process.

18. If you ever get gum stuck in your hair, rub some melted chocolate on the area, it will come right out. Mayonnaise also works.

19. Take a picture of yourself when your hair looks good. Show it to the barber next time you get a haircut. Perfect hair every time!

20.

21. Wrinkly shirt? Throw it in the dryer with a few ice cubes for 5 minutes. Wrinkles gone!

22. In a rush to dry your clothes? Throw in a bath towel, they’ll dry much faster.

23. If a shirt/sweater has static cling, put a safety pin in it. The static will instantly go away.

24. How to un-shrink clothes:

  1. Soak clothing in warm water with 3 tbsp of conditioner for 5 minutes
  2. Lay flat on top of a towel and roll it up like a burrito
  3. Unroll after a few minutes and lay on a new dry towel
  4. Gently stretch to original size and let dry

25. Try applying your deodorant at night instead of the morning! It’ll be more effective and you’ll sweat less the next day.

26. 5 best places to spray perfume or cologne:

  • Inside your wrist
  • Behind your ear
  • Base of your throat
  • Inside your elbow
  • Behind your knee

27. Lick your wrist and smell it. This is what your breath smells like to others.

Confidence

28.

29. If you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things you don’t have enough goals.

30. Confidence is not “They will like me”. Confidence is “I’ll be fine if they don’t”

31. Nervous about a speech, presentation or first date? Blow on your thumb. The Vagus nerve, which connects to your thumb, controls your heart rate, and by blowing on it your heart rate will return to normal.

32. Caught doing something embarrassing in public? Say you lost a bet.

33. Holding your drink at bellybutton levels at bars/parties will make you look more confident.

34. Scared to tackle an obstacle in life? Close your eyes and pretend you’re an 80 year old man who regrets not taking all the chances he could have in life. Then when you really feel like that old man, say to yourself “I wish I was young again”, and open your eyes… BOOM! You’re young again!

35. Nothing will ruin your 20’s more than thinking you should have your life together already.

36. Go 24 hours without complaining (not even once!) then watch how your life starts changing.

37. Life becomes more meaningful when you realize the simple fact that you’ll never get the same moment twice.

38. Want to avoid over-thinking? Focus on what to do next instead of worrying about what went wrong.

39. Don’t delay acting on a good idea. Chances are someone else has thought of it too. Success comes to the one who acts first.

40. Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

41. The happier you are, the less sleep you require to function in everyday life. Sadness increases the urge to sleep more.

42. Take pride in everything you do, from flipping burgers to building rockets. It will always show in the quality of your work.

43. The greatest things never come from inside your comfort zone.

44. If “plan A” didn’t work out, the alphabet has 25 more letters. Stay Cool, Calm, & Carry On!

45. Every time you are able to find humor in a difficult situation, you win.

Networking & Events

46. In a social situation and don’t know anyone? Keep in mind that it’s better to be interested in other people than to try and be interesting.

47. When meeting someone for the first time, ask them what they LIKE to do, rather than what they do. It’ll get them excited & spark conversation!

48. Bonus: mention any of these tips as a conversation starter at events (find more conversation starters here)

49. Make up a 3-4 minute intro about yourself and memorize it. This will come in handy and make you seem more confident in a social setting when asked to “tell little bit about yourself”.

50. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room!

51. Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.

52. If you want someone to really listen to you, start the conversation off with “I shouldn’t be telling you this, but…”

53. Life Tip: If you have to yell, you already lost the argument.

54. A person usually makes a lot of hand gestures when telling a true story. When telling a lie a person’s hands will stay noticeably still.

55. When you start to wonder whether or not you can trust someone, that’s when you already know you can’t.

56. When someone wants to date you they will treat you nice. That doesn’t meant they are nice. Look how they treat others, that is how they will treat you eventually. (this is called the “Waiter rule”)

57. One of the best ways to judge a person’s character is to see how they treat animals.

58. Going to a bar? Start by giving the bartender a $20 tip. You’ll get amazing service the rest of the night.

59. How to figure out a 20% tip:

  1. Take the total ($35.54)
  2. Move decimal over 1 ($3.55)
  3. Double it ($7.10) = 20% tip

60. If someone does a good job for you and you are asked to do a survey, do it. Their compensation may depend on it.

61. Work Tip: When you’re at a work function, always make sure to stay one drink behind your boss.

62. If you lend someone $20 and you never see them again, it was worth the $20.

63. In a public bathroom the stall which is the closest to the door is usually the cleanest because it’s the least used.

64. If you want to buy the cheapest airline tickets online use your browser’s incognito mode.

65. Put dryer sheets in your luggage when you travel. You’ll get fresh smelling clothes no matter where you’re going.

66. Make sure to always take a quick photo of your luggage before traveling. This will help speed the paperwork process immensely if your luggage gets lost. Even better, take a photo of everything you plan to pack, and reuse it for the return trip.

67. When getting a coat check always take a picture of your tickets to prove its yours, just in case you lose it.

68. Change the lock screen on your phone to a picture of your name and contact info (email, Facebook, home number, etc.). That way if you lose it, the finder can easily see who’s phone it is and how to get the phone back to you.

69. If someone wants to see a photo on your phone, launch the camera app from your lock screen before handing it to them. They won’t be able to access any other apps, texts, etc.

70. When a stranger asks you to take a picture for them, take a few unannounced pics as they get ready to pose. Sometimes the candid pics come out best.

71. Photo Hack: Tilting your head to the right and slightly up makes you look more attractive. Tilting it to the right makes you look more intelligent.

72. Tired of searching for your car in those never ending parking lots? Take a picture as soon you park there. Try and include the floor and row number painted on a pillar or wall for an easy find.

73. How to ride the elevator to your floor without stopping: Hold the “close door” button till door closes. Keep holding. Press and hold desired floor number until the elevator starts to move. You’ll go straight to that floor.

74. Before dropping your business card in a bowl for those free lunch draws, make a distinct bend in it. You have a way bigger chance of being picked over all the other ones that lay flat.

Interviews

75. Have a sore throat? Try eating a piece of cucumber. It cools down your throat and will instantly stop that inner itchy feeling.

76. Inhale through your mouth, swallow saliva twice, and slowly exhale through your nose for a 100% effective hiccup cure!

77. Ever wanted to stop a sneeze you feel coming? Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth, and it’s gone.

78. To clear a stuffy nose easily you can push your tongue against roof of mouth, then press finger between eyebrows. Repeat 20 seconds.

79. If you’re coughing uncontrollably, raise your hands above your head and it will stop!

80. Stomach rumbling awkwardly in a public setting? Do not clench your muscles, instead push out like you have a beer belly. The noise will stop instantly.

81. Especially in the workplace, always try to use the phrase “My understanding was…” instead of “I assumed…”. The latter is always viewed as having jumped to a conclusion without having actual evidence.

Productivity

82. Add the 2-minute rule to your life. If it takes only 2 minutes to do, just do it!

83. Swallow The Frog Effect: Do the task you're least looking forward to first and the rest of your day will seem much easier and brighter.

84. You need motivation only till a habit is formed. After that, routine will take care of itself.

85. If you need to remember something in the morning, send yourself a text before you go to bed but don't open it.

86. Complete a simple task like making up your bed or preparing a real breakfast when you wake up in the morning. The feeling of even the smallest accomplishment has been proven to make you more productive during the day.

87. Sitting on a medicine ball instead of a chair while doing work can improve your focus and productivity by 50%.

88. When working with your boss or supervisor never ask “Can you do this for me?”, instead ask “Can you show me how to do this?”

106. Especially if it's your work email, enable Gmail's ‘Undo Send' option, and set it to the maximum of 30 seconds. This can save you from sending a second email with an attachment or other information you forgot.

107. When you sign up for anything online, put the websites name as your middle name. That way when you receive spam/advert emails, you will know who sold your info.

Inspiring Simplicity. Weekend Reads.

Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from it. It requires a conscious decision because it is a countercultural lifestyle that stands against the culture of overconsumption that surrounds us.

The world we live in is not friendly to the pursuit of minimalism. Its tendencies and relentless advertising campaigns call us to acquire more, better, faster, and newer. The journey of finding simplicity requires consistent inspiration.

For that reason, I hope you will make an effort this weekend to find a quiet moment with a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy some of these hand-picked articles to encourage more simplicity in your life.

How to Do More Single-Tasking

You may think you are a good multi-tasker, but science is showing that even if you are better at it than average, multi-taskers are more likely to be stressed than their single-tasking friends.

Besides, none of us are actually very good at it. Our brains are not designed to do more than one thing at a time.

Stress is hard on the body and leads to a worse memory, digestive problems, heart disease, sleep disruption. It also leads to concentration impairment.

Getting into the zone to complete an important project at work or at home takes time. As a result, doing two things at once or rapidly jumping between tasks decreases your performance at both.

Meanwhile, the benefits of single-tasking are abundant—from better health to better productivity.

And while we may know the benefits of single-tasking, putting it into practice regularly can be challenging.

In this post, Leo Babauta reminds us that single-tasking is something we must train ourselves to do—especially in a world intentionally designed to grab our attention and distract us.

Here’s How to Train Yourself for Single-Tasking

1. Start with small bursts. Just like an athlete would train themselves with manageable exercises first, begin with easier rather than daunting tasks.

2. Break down large projects into smaller chunks. Build a plan for achieving large goals with less stress. This helps keep the completion point in sight. It is also a good practice for preventing procrastination by the way.

3. Every evening or morning, choose the most important things you need to complete that day. Start with your most important task, and work from there. For best results, accomplish most with a 3-Item To Do List.

4. Work in bursts, setting a timer if necessary, and slowly increasing the blocks of time in which you’ll single-task. Take breaks for mental recovery in between. That’s known as the Pomodoro Technique.

5. Have only the tools you need for the task available. Clear your desk. Close out open computer tabs. Silence your phone. Clear the clutter.

6. Set unrealistic personal deadlines. Peter Bregman at Harvard Business Review suggests the tactic of forcing single-tasking by giving yourself only a third of the time you think you need to accomplish something. The tighter deadline will keep you more focused, more productive, and less stressed.

7. Save internet research until the end. If you are anything like me, a quick hop on the Internet to look up one little fact often becomes 15 minutes of mindless scrolling. Eliminate the distraction by making a quick note in your work to look up the fact after you’re finished.

8. Enjoy the sensation of completing the time or the task. Notice your gratitude as you cross another item off the list. Use that sense of accomplishment to carry you forward.

9. Remember that sometimes the goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress. Don’t expect to be perfect the first time you try… or even the hundredth time. The goal is to get better, not to get perfect.

If you train yourself to make single-tasking an ingrained habit in your life, you’ll begin accomplishing your goals much faster than you anticipate.

12 Reasons I Like Owning Less

There are many reasons people live a minimalist life. Sometimes it is forced upon them: a low wage, a lost job, or a broken relationship. Others embrace the lifestyle reluctantly, for any number of reasons.

But that is not my story.

My story is that I intentionally chose to own less. It was a decision I made years ago when I stood face-to-face with the emptiness and burden of unneeded physical possessions. And it is a decision that I continue to choose every single day: to own less rather than more.

Why do I choose to live a minimalist life?

I live a minimalist life because I like owning fewer things. Not only do I love minimalism, I genuinely enjoy it.

Here are 12 Reasons I Like Owning Less

1. More Money.

I’ve lived my entire life with enough money to provide, but never too much. As a result, financial considerations have always played a significant role in my decision making. Owning less has freed up money for me and my family. And I kinda like that.

2. Fewer Chores.

I love having less work to do around my house when I am home. When I go to work, I work hard. So when I come home, I like to rest and be with my family. Owning less (and living in a smaller home) means I have fewer household chore demands on my time every evening—and every weekend.

3. More Free Time.

Owning fewer things (and shopping less I might add) has freed up my time to a greater degree than I ever imagined. More free time means more opportunity and more potential for my life.

4. Better Example for my Kids.

Living a minimalist life has modeled for my kids that personal belongings are not the key to happiness, that security is found in their character, and that the pursuit of happiness runs a different road than the pursuit of possessions. These are valuable life lessons.

5. More Intentionality in Life.

I started living a minimalist life because I was discontented with the focus of my life’s energy. But among its greatest gifts, owning less brought me intentionality—not just in the things that I chose to own, but in my pursuit of wellness, values, and spirituality. And for that, I couldn’t possibly be more thankful.

6. Aligns with my Faith.

I dive deeper into my personal faith in my book, The More of Less, than I choose to do here on Becoming Minimalist. But minimalism has been a spiritual journey for me. It has not only brought new understanding to my faith, it has brought greater depth of practice. That alignment is something I cherish.

7. Better Relationships with Others.

Owning less has allowed me opportunity to be a better friend. I should be careful here, I wouldn’t say that minimalism automatically makes somebody a better friend and/or person. But it does provide extra margin in life for somebody to become that.

8. Less Comparison.

There is no joy to be found in comparison—and so many of the comparisons we make in our mind have to do with material possessions. It’s a shame really, those things shouldn’t impress us. But when I choose to intentionally own less, I also choose to no longer compare what I have with others.

9. More Opportunity to Contribute.

It seems to me either we’re living for ourselves or we’re living for others. And while I understand there is a proper time for both, too many people (and for too much of life) spend too much of their energy focused on selfish living. As I reject the empty notion of always desiring more and more for myself, I free myself to live selflessly for others.

10. Better Self-Understanding.

Minimalism forces questions of values onto a person. It caused me to question assumptions about my purpose, passion, and inward motivations. The journey inward is not always easy, but it is always important. And choosing to own less prompted that for me.

11. Own Higher Quality Things.

When I buy fewer things, I open up my life to the opportunity of owning nicer things. I will admit this benefit of minimalism came unexpected to me. For some reason, I didn’t connect owning fewer things and owning nicer things. But the truth is, they go hand-in-hand and are directly related.

12. More Appreciation for the Things I Do Own.

Sometimes, the easiest way to feel more satisfaction in life is to appreciate what we already have. And it is impossible to appreciate the things you have if you’re constantly obsessing over the things you don’t. As I intentionally own less, I develop a greater appreciation for the things I have chosen to keep.

Minimalist living is countercultural. It is contrary to every advertisement we have ever seen because we live in a society that prides itself on the accumulation of possessions. But for me? I like owning less. I enjoy living a countercultural life. The reasons for it are life-giving.
