7 Powerful Ways To Maintain Momentum After Decluttering
Note: This is a guest post from Anthony Ongaro of Break the Twitch.
“One quick question: why are we all working so hard for stuff we don’t need, just so you can ‘tidy up’ and give it all way…?” —Carl Richards
It’s no secret that removing excess can create an incredible amount of freedom. With fewer things to organize, less financial stress, and more time to pursue things that matter, minimalism creates opportunity to design a life more aligned with your values.
Once you’re in the swing of things, it feels great to donate and declutter items from your home. At a certain point, you’ll reach a place of equilibrium where you’ll simply have to maintain the work you’ve done. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to continue building upon the progress you’ve made.
Here are seven ways to create new opportunities and take additional steps in your intentional living journey.
1. Start a blog. Starting a blog is one of the most important things I’ve done for my intentional living journey. A blog provides personal accountability, a record of learnings over the years, and a place online where people can connect with you. I’ve found it incredibly rewarding to connect with other bloggers and creators who are making things they’re passionate about. Many of these connections would have never happened had I not started putting my ideas out into the world online.
2. Take better care of your things. If you’ve pared down your belongings in a significant way, you should be left with the things that you love most. A little bit of extra care can preserve them for much longer than typical lifecycles. For example, using a dryer is one of the most damaging things you can do to your clothes. With fewer clothing items, hang-drying is quick, easy, and preserves the quality of the clothing. I’ve learned to enjoy doing laundry, and thanks to this method, I have many shirts that still look brand new despite being worn every week for the last two years. I use a folding rack that can be easily stored when not in use.
3. Travel somewhere new. Going to a new, unfamiliar place can be perspective-changing, and incredibly powerful. Try visiting a place that is outside of your comfort zone, perhaps somewhere less economically fortunate than where you live. There are very happy people all over the world living on a fraction of the income that an average first world resident earns. Traveling to such places will change the way you think about money, and the power of what it can accomplish when used effectively.
4. Donate money. When we commit to live with less, the money we require each month decreases. As debt gets paid off and spending lessens, you can choose to leverage your resources to change the world for the better. There are organizations doing amazing work, putting 100% of donated funds towards projects that make a direct and immediate difference in people’s lives. Not only do you get the freedom that comes with choosing to live with less, but it’s incredibly rewarding to know that you’re making a difference in people’s lives.
5. Volunteer time. It feels great to serve others, but connecting with other volunteers can be just as rewarding. It’s empowering and uplifting to be around people who help others actively take steps to do so. Spend some time connecting with people in the spirit of giving and you will find your own life filled with joy and gratitude. Find an organization with a mission that aligns with your values, then register to volunteer with them.
6. Do nothing. Just because you have more time and energy to do something, doesn’t always mean you should. It’s easy to fall back into the “busy” trap and let unproductive things fill the space created by decluttering. One of the best things you can do for yourself is leave some room to breathe, relax, or simply catch up. Put the smartphone away, sit, and gaze out the window for a while. It may feel unproductive, but rest assured: you’re sharpening the axe instead of chopping with a dull blade.
7. Establish a new daily habit. In order to enhance the positive changes you’ve created through decluttering, implement a few daily habits into your life. Start with just one thing and do it every day for a week; then add on another thing each week. These habits can be anything from a 10 minute walk to spending a few minutes learning new Spanish vocabulary words. Start small, build up as you go, and commit to at least 60 consecutive days.
Intentional living is a lifelong pursuit, and doesn’t stop once the decluttering is done. There are many ways to spend your time and energy that add substantial value, opportunity and joy for yourself and the people you love.

Inspiring Simplicity. Weekend Reads.
Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it. It requires a conscious decision because it is a countercultural lifestyle that stands against the culture of overconsumption that surrounds us.
The world we live in is not friendly to the pursuit of minimalism. Its tendencies and relentless advertising campaigns call us to acquire more, better, faster, and newer. The journey of finding simplicity requires consistent inspiration.
For that reason, I hope you will make an effort this weekend to find a quiet moment with a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy some of these hand-picked articles to encourage more simplicity in your life.

🙈 How To Overcome These Awkward Job Interview Moments
You too can squirm out of these 9 common job interview situations.
No matter how much preparation you have done, job interviews create stress and nervous behavior. We have all experienced some awkward moments in job interviews bring, so how can we overcome them and help ourselves beat the fear?
This is a guest post by Corinne Hutchinson.
Free bonus: The One Job Interview Resource You’ll Ever Need is a handy reference to help you prepare for any kind of job interview. Download it free now
1) You are late
How can someone who is coming for a job interview be "running late" by 30 mins and fail to inform the interviewer?
— Rajat Agrawal (@rajatagr) July 11, 2016
Running late, even 5 minutes, is not acceptable for an interview. It gives a bad impression plus you turn up flustered, giving yourself a rocky start.
What to do next time?
First, work out WHY you were late and take it from there. If it was traffic or the train was delayed, make sure on your next interview, you do a practice journey to anticipate the length and potential traffic jams. You could also leave at least an extra ½ hour earlier, find a coffee shop locally and sit and wait until it’s time. If you woke up late and turned your alarm off, get 2 alarms or go to bed earlier. You cannot afford to be late for an interview, anytime, so take the precautionary steps to avoid.
2) Limp or sweaty handshake
I had a job interview at the lib and the librarian went to shake my hand but i gave her a pencil instead fml I'm perpetually awkward 🆘
— Ahmed Eldesoky (@TweetsByAhmed) April 13, 2016
You turn up with sweaty palms and shake the interviewer’s before wiping your hands dry and cooling them off. The shame!
What to do next time?
Carry a handkerchief if you often suffer from sweaty hands and remind yourself to air and dry them before you even walk into the building, let alone the interview room.
3) Eye contact
You maintain good initial eye contact with your interviewer but then comes a moment where you are both staring at each other and you do not feel comfortable blinking or moving your glance away first. Your eyes start to water and you start to squint. You lose track of your thoughts.
What to do next time?
Remind yourself that your interviewer could be as uncomfortable as you and that the interview is a two-way street. If you feel your eyes about to water just blink and regain eye contact. Try not to spend the entire interview looking at the walls, ceilings and the interviewer’s clothes but do not be afraid to look away either.
4) Answering a question incorrectly
You are so nervous that you did not listen properly to the question, you begin to answer it but incorrectly and have gone off on the wrong tangent. Halfway through, you realize your mistake but still carry on and ignore the issue. You squirm and it effects your confidence for the rest of the interview.
What to do next time?
Be honest. If halfway through the question you notice that you’re talking about something totally irrelevant, stop yourself, apologize and remind the interviewer what their question was and then begin to answer it accordingly. It will show them that you are confident to own up to mistakes and confidently turn it around.
5) Slag of previous employer
Went to a job interview and they asked me why I left Pollo Loco I had to lie to them cuz I didn't wanna make Pollo Loco look bad
— Ałex (@alex_wtf_bruh) December 29, 2015
You’re asked why you left your recent employer and you go into huge detail about how terrible your manager was and the issues surrounding your leaving. Uh ok – epic fail. You really do not need to drop in this air of negativity as you come off worse all around.
What to do next time?
Make sure you have prepared an appropriate response as to WHY you left your company and ensure any of your answers to questions asked do not revert back to negative comments regarding your previous boss, colleagues or company. If you do, by mistake, start to talk about something like this, apologize straight away, take a deep breath and wrap up your answer with added positivity.
6) Waffling and repeating yourself
Getting stuck on a point, waffling around it and repeating the same thing in different ways is common behavior as a result of being nervous. Once you start, and you know you’re doing it, it’s pretty hard to nip it in the bud. It is also frustrating for an interviewer to listen to, so be more aware.
What to do next time?
By preparing yourself with the answers to a variety of interview questions and by feeling more confident in your ability to be able to answer them in different way, you will more likely avoid the waffling. Practice answering questions with friends or family and make a conscious effort to tail off your answer to come to a final point and complete it without repeating the answer in several ways. Practice makes perfect
7) You swear
Sometimes when you are passionate and excited it is easy to let a swear word out.
What to do next time?
If your interviewer has portrayed more prolific terminology, do not allow yourself to slip to their standards – remain professional at all times. If you swear by accident for whatever reason, do not make too much of a big deal about it but do not ignore it. Again, best to apologize and simply explain how you are so passionate about the situation. Once you’ve made an apology, regain your composure and finish your answer. Owning up to a mistake and displaying a graceful recovery speaks wonders.
8) Your phone rings
Pro tip: Even if your job interview is done remotely/over video, don't let your phone ring 3 FREAKING TIMES before silencing it. #srsly
— Bill Burke (@billplaysdrums) November 24, 2015
You are mid-way through answering a question or worse, the interviewer is talking and your phone rings. Doh! A common mistake but also one that many people should now be in the habit of dealing with.
What to do next time?
First off, turn off your phone before you enter into the building. Secondly, if the phone rings, apologize quickly, find your phone and turn it off asap. Don’t even look at the screen and especially DO NOT answer it! Explain that you were more wrapped up with preparing for the interview than worrying about turning your phone off.
9) Your fly was down
You leave the interview and notice that you are flying low 🛬 and have been the whole time… The interviewer is probably not going to mention it but let’s just hope that you were well covered up while seated and they didn’t notice.
What to do next time?
Don’t worry too much – this is more of an embarrassing mistake than having the job riding on it. But no matter how much of a rush you may be in, you need to get into the habit of drawing your zip up. 🛫

11 Ways to Simplify Your Financial Life
Note: This is a guest post from Bob Lotich of SeedTime.
I began my journey into minimalism a little over a year ago, and soon began experiencing the benefits of having less and living a simpler life.
Running a personal finance blog, I began to ask myself, “How can I apply these principles to my money?”
I don’t know about you, but I have found that in my life, my finances are entirely too involved. And too often, I feel that they are controlling me.
Those aren’t ridiculous conclusions, considering how complicated finance has become on all levels, as well as the rapid pace of change that it throws at us.
But here are 11 ways to simplify your financial life and put greater control back in your hands.
1. Consolidate Bank Accounts and Retirement Accounts
Most people can get by just fine with one checking account and one savings account. If you have more, consolidate your various accounts into a single checking account and one savings account. You’ll simplify your banking, without resulting in any loss in service level.
The same is true of retirement accounts. If you have several, due to having previous jobs with 401(k) plans, simplify your life by rolling those plans over to a self-directed IRA account. Not only will this reduce paperwork, but it will also eliminate account fees, and make it much easier to manage your retirement assets.
2. Get Rid of as Much Paperwork as You Can
Having multiple accounts for various financial pursuits can lead to piles of paperwork building up around your home. You may not even take the time to read through them, but the existence of large amounts of paperwork can be stressful all by itself.
Get rid of any paperwork that isn’t absolutely necessary, and shift account statements and notifications to online. And if you’re reducing the number of financial accounts that you have, the amount of correspondence will drop anyway.
3. Cut Back to Just One Credit Card
If you have a passion for rewards and zero interest rate promotions, you may have built up an impressive inventory of credit cards. But once the rewards and zero interest are gone, the cards have little value.
Keep them open for credit scoring purposes, but focus your credit card use on a single card. Choose the one that offers the best benefits and put the rest away. It’s much simpler to manage your spending and handle payments with a single credit card then with five or ten.
TIP: For most people wanting a good rewards credit card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the way to go.
4. Become Debt Free
Debt doesn’t just cost you money, it also makes life more complicated. Not only do you have to spend more time paying bills, but multiple debts are serious sources of stress. Think of it this way: Each debt that you eliminate takes out one complication in your life.
One of the very best ways to simplify your financial life is to become debt free. It won’t happen overnight, but just establishing a plan to make it happen can go a long way toward simplifying your life.
5. Invest in Funds Rather than Individual Stocks
Investing in individual stocks can be fun and rewarding, but it’s also messy. You have to research, purchase, track, and sell each stock in your portfolio. If you have dozens, it can be the equivalent of a part-time job.
You can avoid all of that hassle by investing in either mutual funds or exchange traded funds. Index funds are particularly attractive, since very few actively managed funds ever outperform the market.
Funds are also much simpler when it comes time to file your tax return. Individual stocks require a lot of tax related documentation, and that can also raise the cost of tax preparation.
6. Pay Cash Whenever Possible
Yes, it sounds old school, but it does have its advantages. It avoids getting receipts, and tracking expenses after the fact, the way you do with both debit and credit cards. With cash, you can make your purchase and move on.
Use your credit card on larger purchases that may require buyer protection or a potential refund situation. Then simplify your financial life by making your smaller purchases in cash.
7. Cut Out Any Services You Don’t Need or Regularly Use
You probably pay for subscriptions and services that you hardly use. By eliminating them, you will simplify your life and remove yet another payment from your budget. The fewer payments you need to make, the simpler your finances will be.
8. Cut Down on Your Goals
It’s important to have goals established to achieve important milestones in life. But you probably can’t successfully manage more than one or two goals at one time. In fact, multiple goals can spread your efforts in too many directions, and cause needless confusion.
Pick the one or two goals that are most important to you right now, pursue them with a vengeance, and let the other goals go for another time. Your chance of succeeding in any one goal will then increase dramatically.
9. Rent a Home Rather than Owning
There’s a world of documentation supporting the emotional and long-term financial benefits of homeownership. But owning your own home comes with a long list of expenses and responsibilities that you wouldn’t have if you rented. For example, you wouldn’t need to be concerned about repairs, maintenance, or HOA special assessments. Your landlord would be responsible for those.
Generally speaking, renting reduces you to just a monthly rent payment, and a small number of utilities. Anything beyond that will not be your concern. That will simplify both your finances and your life.
10. Do More of What Brings in the Most Income
This applies most directly to the self-employed and to commissioned salespeople, but it does have relevance to salaried employees as well. The idea is to focus most of your efforts and time on the work activities that are likely to generate the most income. Reduce the amount of time you spend on administrative functions by either offloading or subbing them out to someone else.
For salaried employees, this could be concentrating effort on activities that are likely to produce a larger bonus, or put you in a better position to be promoted.
This single change in strategy can both increase your income, and simplify the income earning process of your life.
11. Turn off Your TV and Go Easy on the Internet
Information is good – to a point. But after that, it turns into noise and promotes mental clutter. The “experts” on TV and the Internet are there to relentlessly inform you that you need to do this, or to stop doing that, or to buy here, or to invest there. It’s an advice merry-go-round in which the specific advice always changes, but the flow never ends.
Confusion is never a sound position from which to simplify your financial life. Limit the amount of information you take in, restricting it only to the most trusted sources, then tune out the rest.
Implementing just a few of these changes can go a long way toward simplifying your financial life.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. What have you done to simplify your financial life?

Demystifying Financial Related Stress
Money is, by definition, a tool to expedite trade. At some point in human history, someone decided it was easier to carry metal coins to the market than bartering chickens for textiles. Money was born and agreed upon as an acceptable unit of trade.
By its nature, it retains no moral or immoral attributes. It only makes trading goods more convenient. If I have enough currency to provide for my basic needs, it should not be a source of pain or anxiety in life.
Unfortunately, this is not typically the case. According to a recent study, Nearly three out of four adults reported feeling stressed about money at least some of the time. Despite living in one of the wealthiest nations in the history of the world, money continues to be the top source of stress in American’s lives.
This juxtaposition is fascinating to me. And I think it is important to understand why that is the case.
At the outset, I should mention money is a complicated conversation. There are very few specific realities that can be blindly offered—especially to such a vast and varied community as this one.
We vary in many ways:
Financial Standing: Some of us live with excess, some of us in debt. Debt, by its nature, brings anxiety and worry into our lives. And overcoming stress completely can be difficult until we get out from under it.
Income: Some earn a living well above our needs, some specifically allocate each penny for budgets to align, and others fall further and further behind.
Socioeconomic Background: Some of us grew up with plenty, others with very little. These backgrounds reflect themselves consistently in our expectations. James Altucher once famously wrote that he felt poor with less than $10 million in the bank, while most of us would never dream of having that much. Our backgrounds greatly influence our expectations.
Cost of Living: Becoming Minimalist readers are scattered all across the globe with various costs of living. Some live in areas where the cost of living is high (New York City) while others live in places where money can buy much more.
World/Religious Views: Our views of the world and humanity greatly influence our understanding of money. Sometimes these views offer peace, sometimes they bring guilt and shame, while others pile additional stress and anxiety on our lives.
Committed Relationships: There is little shock when people first hear that money is one of the leading factors in divorce rates. When two people with differing personalities and backgrounds come together in the same family, there is almost always some friction. And friction in our most valued relationships naturally results in a level of anxiety.
Consequences from Decisions: Some financial decisions take years and years to overcome. One foolish shopping spree in our twenties may still haunt our credit score today. Even if we are responsible spenders today, we may still be feeling the ill-effects of less-wise choices from our younger self.
Because of these variations, specific thoughts about money are almost impossible and sweeping generalities must be personally evaluated before they can be applied.
But as I consider the evidence, I see two main reasons that almost 75% of us experience money-related stress: 1) We wish we had more; 2) We spend as if we already have more.
1. We wish we had more. There are any number of reasons why people want more money—sometimes those reasons are healthy, sometimes they are unhealthy. Certainly, the possession of money is not contrary to a simplified life, but a simplified life is not possible if money possesses you. Those who love money can never be satisfied. They will never own enough. They will always desire more. And those who desire to be rich carry the weight of that burden every day. It will always hold hostage your thoughts, your attitude, and your actions. It results in extra stress. When the love of money is present, freedom is not.
2. We spend as if we already have more. Another significant reason for money-related stress is the propensity of so many to live beyond their means—going into debt by spending more than they earn. Sometimes this is a result of poor management or unexpected emergency expenses, but most of the time it is a result of excessive consumerism.
There aren’t necessarily easy answers for overcoming the reasons above. But at the very least, demystifying and labeling the reasons for our financial anxiety moves us one step closer to overcoming them.

Inspiring Simplicity. Weekend Reads.
Never underestimate the importance of removing stuff you don’t need.
Encouragement is important in all areas of life, but especially when trying to live a life different than those around us.
Encouragement provides us with motivation to persevere. It invites us to dream dreams of significance for our lives. And it begs us to work diligently with optimism and promise.
Overcoming the pull of consumerism is a difficult challenge regardless of our stage in life. Simplicity requires encouragement. To that end, I hope you will find motivation in these articles below.
Each post was intentionality chosen to inspire simplicity in your life. For maximum effect, find a quiet moment this weekend and enjoy them with a fresh cup of coffee or tea.
